Do you like working with children? Do you enjoy sharing your creativity with others? Would you like to work in a team oriented environment with other teenagers and young adults like yourself? If so, Camp Smile may have a position for you! Read on to find out more.
Since 1972, Camp Smile INC. has been providing blind children living both in and around Rochester with a special place where they can learn new things, meet and play with other blind children their own age and get opportunities to experience life through other senses like touching, tasting, and hearing. At Camp Smile, we play games, do arts and crafts, go on field trips and much more! For many blind children, the idea of riding a bike and playing games with other children their age, is nothing more than just a dream and wishful thinking. Camp Smile, makes that dream a reality. When kids leave our camp site, they often walk away with smiles and fond memories that will last them a lifetime. Sometimes at the end of camp, our head director’s home phone just lights up with call after call, from excited children all asking, “when does camp start next year?” They ask because they find it so hhard having to wait a whole year before they can return to camp. While there are similarities, it may surprise you to know, that we are not like the average place of employment. At your last summer job, you probably had to find your own way to and from work. Most companies and organizations don’t provide transportation to their employees. But Camp Smile does.
Once you’ve been hired and you’ve submitted your applications, our head director will make arrangements for one of our friendly transportation specialists to come pick you up. That person will drive you to and from the camp site everyday. You also have the option of driving yourself back and forth if that would be more convenient. Important note. Be advised, that if you live outside of Monroe County, you will have to drive yourself back and forth. Or, if you have friends and/or family living in Monroe county, in either Greece, Gates, Spencerport, Henrietta, the city of Rochester, Irondequoit, Brighton or Webster, if possible, maybe you could stay with them throughout the summer while you’re working with us and we could pick you up at their house. Due to time constraints and fuel costs, Our transportation specialists are not able to transport outside the county. So, if you have friends and/or family living in either of the places I’ve mentioned above, and they’re able to and willing to let you stay with them during the duration of camp, we could pick you up there. Another possibility would be to have someone who is reliable, and trustworthy, drive you to and from the camp site. A new counselor whom we hired last year, did just that. She lives in Pitsford, to which is part of Monroe County, but our drivers don’t go there. Her parents drove her to and from the camp everyday. So even though you may live in a part of town to which we don’t go to, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t work for us. For those of you majoring in child psychology, human services, or Education, this position could be a big help to you. It can help you learn the people skills needed to work in those professions. Some of our best former counselors have become teachers, paramedics, speech pathologists, even musicians. Working at Camp Smile, is an exciting and rewarding experience for students in junior high through college and we’d love for you to be a part of it. Feel free to share this ad with your friends, classmates, and siblings who you think may be interested in applying.
