A Week of Pleasant Surprises
Our time here in Leeds is passing by so quickly! Already we are onto our third volunteering opportunity at Hollybank Trust, working with adults and children with severe disabilities. Besides this volunteer opportunity, we have had the chance to work as student ambassadors at Leeds Metropolitan University, as well as spend a day in York.
This past Wednesday through Saturday, I volunteered as a student ambassador at Leeds Metropolitan University. I am a student of Political Science, Legal Studies, and Communications-so when I was assigned to work with students who were interested in “sport” (physical therapy, physical education, nutrition, etc.) it was nerve-racking. However, I could not have had a better time while working with students 17 to 18 years, thinking of going to University. I was happy to answer the students many questions, and became quite close with my group in a matter of four days. The other ambassadors were all very sweet and nice and I was sad to see say goodbye.
On Sunday we ventured to York. Quickly, the group honed in on the many shopping opportunities. In addition to shopping, we appreciated the amazing history within the city. It was a nice free day before heading to Hollybank Trust to work with severely disabled persons. Today was our first day, and I admit my nervousness, as I have not worked intensely with those who are disabled. Despite, my nervousness I had a great first day, working alongside two disabled individuals who enjoyed massage and music therapy. This short experience alone was very moving. I can only hope what is to come these next few days.
If I could sum up the past week I would say, expect the unexpected, as I have worked with individuals and shared experiences I never thought possible. Traveling and volunteering in the UK has been an adventure and half, and there still a whole week and half to go J (pictures below).
