What better time to turn over a new leaf than with the start of the Fall Semester? The Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery Office in the Nazareth College Library is up to the challenge! A Go Green Challenge!
Problem. Each year the ILL/Doc Del Office receives an average 7,000 article requests from other libraries and an additional 5,000 requests from Nazareth faculty and students for scans and delivery of material owned in our collection. While an average 4,000 requests can be looked up on workstations, identified as owned electronically at Naz, downloaded and delivered without printing a single piece of paper, there are many more that need to be printed out as “retrieval slips” for ILL Student Assistants and Staff to use in retrieving, scanning and delivering of material to our customers.
An estimated 8,000 requests are printed out each year, three requests per piece of paper, and printed on the back of already used paper if we can.
Here’s the math:
- 8,000 requests ÷ 3 per sheet = 2,667 sheets of paper.
(Rarely do print jobs equal out to exactly 3 requests per page. So, add 1,000 sheets where only 1 or 2 requests printed).
- 2,667 sheets + 1,000 sheets= 3,667 sheets of paper.
- 1 Ream of paper = 500 sheets.
- 3,667 ÷ 500 = 7 reams +
- 7 reams = 42 lbs of paper
- 1 tree produces 200lbs of paper
- We’re using 1/5 tree per year just printing retrieval slips that get tossed away with 24 hours.
Solution. This Fall the ILL Student Assistants & Staff will pilot utilizing an iPad, GoogleDrive, and the annotation app GoodReader to virtually ‘print’ article retrieval tickets, saving paper, saving trees!
Are you up to the ILL Green Challenge?
Save a tree of two by foregoing the printing of ILL or Document Delivery materials and opting instead to utilize annotation software or apps to mark up and highlight your electronically delivered PDFs. Or, if you need to print choose double-sided. The trees will thank you!
